02

Type X or Type C

Both are fire-rated. The 1/2" fire-rated board is Type C; at 5/8", the board may be Type X or Type C. Type C has more glass fiber and additives that hold the core together longer once it starts to calcine, and certain UL assemblies — especially horizontal ones and shaft walls — call for it specifically. Send us the UL number and we will pull the right board.

03

Manufacturers

National Gypsum · American Gypsum. USG and Georgia-Pacific by order.

Common questions

Ask the counter.

Do you carry 16-foot Type X?+

Not on the rack. Twelve is the longest we stock; anything longer is a few days out.

Is 1/2" Type C the same rating as 5/8" Type X or Type C?+

No. The board type and thickness must match the tested assembly. Our 1/2" fire-rated board is Type C; 5/8" may be Type X or Type C. Check the UL listing before you substitute.

What is the difference between Type X and Type C?+

Type C holds up longer in a fire. Some assemblies require it. If the print says C, use C.

Do you carry USG or Georgia-Pacific board?+

By order. Our stocked board is American Gypsum and National Gypsum; if the spec names USG or GP we can get it in a few days.
