Which edge wants which

J-bead caps a raw board edge where it will not get finished — inside a jamb, under a sill. L-bead finishes an edge that will get compound, against a window frame or a dissimilar material. Tear-away is L-bead with a strip that peels off after finishing for a clean line against a frame. The size is the board thickness: 1/2" bead for 1/2" board, 5/8" board takes 3/4" or the next size up depending on the profile.

Common questions

Ask the counter.

What do I use where drywall meets a steel window frame?+

Tear-away L-bead. Finish it, pull the strip, caulk the gap. Clean line, no compound on the frame.
