Fine thread for steel studs — it self-taps into 20-gauge and holds. Coarse thread for wood — it bites. Self-drilling for heavier steel, 18 gauge and up, where a fine-thread screw will strip before it starts. Cement-board screws are corrosion-resistant with a wafer head, and they are the only thing that should go into cement board. Half-inch and 7/16" are for track and clips, not board.
